Joseph G. Demeter, M.D., F.A.C.S.
Joseph G. Demeter, M.D., F.A.C.S. joined Surgical Associates of Springfield, Inc., in 1992. A native of Dayton, Ohio, Dr. Demeter earned a B.S. in Pre-medicine from the University of Dayton, Summa Cum Laude, University Honors Degree. He was chosen to be a member of the First Honors Class at the University of Dayton and is a graduate of the First University Honors class. He continued his education at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, where he was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society his Junior year, an honor given to only 10% - 15% of the medical school class. Upon receiving his Doctor of Medicine Degree, Dr. Demeter was given the Upjohn Achievement Award for "Excellence in The Clinical Arts and Outstanding Personal Qualities".
Dr. Demeter completed his surgical internship at the University of Louisville Medical Center and completed his surgical residency at the Loyola University Medical Center in Chicago, Illinois. His training included all aspects of general surgery as well as vascular surgery, general thoracic (chest) surgery and laparoscopic surgery. While at Loyola, Dr. Demeter performed basic science research in the field of endocrine surgery, culminating in presentations of his work at National Surgical Meetings and publications in National Surgical Journals. He also performed clinical research on other topics such as cancer surgery and presented these at national meetings. Dr. Demeter published a total of 11 papers in peer reviewed surgical and medical journals during his training at Loyola. In addition to broad training in general, vascular, and general thoracic surgery, Dr. Demeter was one of the first groups of residents trained in laparoscopic gallbladder removal.
Since starting his surgical practice in Springfield, he has not only maintained an interest and active practice in general, vascular and thoracic surgery, including video-assisted thoracic surgery (thorascoscopy), Dr. Demeter has been on the leading edge by introducing new laparoscopic surgical procedures to this area. He was the first to perform both laparoscopic colon surgery and laparoscopic anti-reflux surgery (Nissen Fundoplication) in the Springfield area. In the area of breast cancer surgery, he has been trained in and is performing sentinel lymph node mapping and removal, and Mammosite radiation balloon catheter insertion to decrease radiation treatment time for breast cancer. These techniques are the newest tools offered to breast cancer patients in an effort to make treatment less invasive and of shorter duration. Dr. Demeter is proud to be able to provide the most up-to-date surgical care to Springfield area residents and is committed to continue learning new techniques in surgery in order to provide the best possible surgical care right here at home.
Dr. Demeter also performs minimally invasive treatment of varicose veins and venous reflux in the office. These newer procedures, including VNUS Closure, allow less invasive treatment for varicose veins, leg swelling and pain, as well as certain leg ulcers. Dr. Demeter is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Surgery at Wright State University School of Medicine, and currently maintains an active practice at Community Hospital, Mercy Medical Center and the Springfield Surgery Center. He is Board Certified by the American Board of Surgery and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (F.A.C.S.). He is also a member of the Ohio State Medical Association, Clark County Medical Society, American Society of General Surgeons, and Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. Dr. Demeter has served the local medical community by participation in several committees. These include the Executive Committee, Credentials Committee, and the Peer Review Committee at Community Hospital and the Founding Board of Covenant Health and Institutional Review Committee at Mercy Medical Center. He is also currently a board member of Surgeons and Physicians, Ltd., a local physician group dedicated to promote quality and cost-efficient medical care to the community.
